VOLUNTEER
RECOGNITION
SUNDAY:
JUNE 2007

It is an unwritten rule that laity are at the heart of the small church.  Volunteer Bill Tomek didn’t want us to list the things he has done, saying “recognitions – professional or personal – make me uneasy.  My work and service are just part of normal life.”

Still, we insist on lauding our volunteers who set the example for the rest of us.  We know things do not happen by themselves.  The Rev. Taryn Mattice, Chaplain of Cornell University’s Protestant Cooperative Ministry, says that “sometimes we need to know less about the ‘great saints’ honored in the church’s calendar and preserved in its stained glass, and more about the ‘practical saints’ – the ones who get up in the morning, head out the door, and show their courage in the hundreds of small decisions woven into the mundane fabric of the day.”

Bill’s favorite hymns and readings were followed by a favorite prayer from Harry Truman which asks for help in doing things “for the sake of right and honor and without thought of reward.  Dear God, give me the ability to be charitable, forgiving and patient.  Help me understand the motives and shortcoming of others, even as Thou understandest mine.”
